India's labour codes came into force on 21 November 2025. They keep the 48-hour working week and require overtime to be paid at least at twice the normal wage rate.

The rules in brief

The formula

Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly wage × 2

If you are paid monthly, your employer works out the hourly rate from your wages as defined in your contract and the applicable rules. Ask HR how your hourly rate is calculated, because allowances may or may not be included.

Overtime pay chart

Hourly wageOvertime rate (2×)Pay for 4 OT hoursPay for 10 OT hours
₹100₹200₹800₹2,000
₹150₹300₹1,200₹3,000
₹200₹400₹1,600₹4,000
₹300₹600₹2,400₹6,000
₹500₹1,000₹4,000₹10,000

Worked example

You earn ₹200 an hour and work 52 hours in a week. The first 48 hours are normal time; the extra 4 hours are overtime.

Normal pay: 48 × ₹200 = ₹9,600. Overtime pay: 4 × ₹200 × 2 = ₹1,600. Total for the week: ₹11,200.
